Nice rack ;)
« on: May 27, 2013, 10:58:44 PM »
needed something to hold up those pretty yellow tubes, so after 2 days,$160 bucks (materials), 1L paint (brunswick green) and 200 screws the final finished products:

bought the wood from Bunnings, NZ pine nice and light for its strength.
made up 13 racks total which works out round 12 bucks each, not too bad .
will make up a tutorial at some stage with my measurements and step by step photos I took along the way.

well commercially I can tell you that we only really use 2'' ti salutes, that and roman candles :P everything's 2.5 these days im guessing that the Chinese like me don't enjoy building such small shells. seriously using a teaspoon to put stars in place.... ::)

Has anyone looked into using weld mesh to make the racks? just looking one a Chinese sale site, they sell metal folding racks with 2 layers of weld mesh to keep the tubes upright? and then fold to a flatpack. They size then from 1" upto 6" (that I can see). Just chasing people's perception on this idea, as I think flat packing would be the way to go for ease of transport.
Cheers

Seeing Anarchy's racks inspired me to do pretty much the same;
Using Anarchy's style of rack with added spacers between the tubes, also using the same NZ Pine from Bunnings (pretty nice timber!), not sure if I'll paint them yet or maybe stain and varnish.
Its basically 3 x 5 shot racks joined together for added stability

So here's some photos of my new 15 shot 2" rack. Only have 13 tubes though (10 new and 3 older ones)

haha, you still have virgin mortars :P

nice rack ;)

Im out of puns.. you will want paint/seal that i can tell you that it will turn black from soot and burning quick match eventually, and sanding it back wont be fun.

only the 2'' rack? will we see a few more editions soon?

Yep they're virgins alright, just took them out of the package today!

Now I need to build all the shells to put in them!
I might paint it just so the wood doesn't swell and is water proof - I think I have some laying around somewhere!

Might eventually do a 3" rack, since I have plenty of old pallet wrapping tubes. Don't know about larger tubes though, I still haven't even found somewhere to get a 6" mortar. Will need a 12" too, quite a way in the future (got 2 from DH before he shut - mostly just for "look how big my hemi's are")

Nice racks, very tidy job, as Anarchy says paint or seal as soon as you can they get burnt and sooty real quick
There's a few missing, Ill send you a couple.

When you said my rack would turn black eventually from all the firing I didn't know it would work that quick!
I've only fired one shot per mortar and this is what it looks like now!

I thought that if its going to turn black, then the best colour to paint it is black. The result is pretty cool!
I also get quite a nice contrast with the yellow tubes, and it shouldn't be too visible during a show!
I thought the stenciling was a great idea, especially when loading the smaller tubes and one can't really tell if they're 2" or 2.5" mortars, so now its clearly stated!
